Billionaire achieves 17-year space dream, calls it ‘the dawn of a new space age’

What happened : On Sunday, British billionaire Richard Branson flew more than 50 miles above the New Mexico desert on his Virgin Galactic rocket plane and safely returned in the vehicle’s first fully crewed test flight to space.

Details : The touchdown occurred at around 9:40am Mountain Time (1540 GMT), about an hour after take-off. It reached a peak altitude of around 53 miles (85 kilometres), beyond the boundary of space, according to the United States, enabled the passengers to experience weightlessness for 8 minutes and admire the Earth’s curvature from a distance. It wasn’t the first time a billionaire went to space, however it was the first time a billionaire did so on his own spacecraft.

“Having flown to space, I can see how Virgin Galactic is the space line for Earth,” Branson said after his flight. “We’re here to make space more accessible to all, and we’re going to turn the next generation of dreamers to the next generation of astronauts.”

In his interview, he stated:

"We're here to make space more accessible to all. We want to turn the next generation of dreamers into the astronauts of today and tomorrow. We've all us on this stage have had the most extraordinary experience, and we'd love it if a number of you can have it, too...If you ever had a dream, now is the time to make it come true. I'd like to end by saying welcome to the dawn of a new space age."

On July 20, the 52nd anniversary of Americans first landing on the moon, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos plans to go on first crewed flight to space in New Shepard capsule as a passenger conducted by his company, Blue Origin.
