The Kimchi Girl (@thekimchigirl_) brand is an expression of the delicious food the founder has experienced on her travels. Her Italian line is fast becoming the best in the city as The Kimchi Girl uses fresh, organic, homemade pasta to roll her ravioli. Read our exclusive interview with The Kimchi Girl! What inspired you to start a ravioli line? Italy is one of those sites that once you go there, you just fall in love with the place — and to fall in love with Italy is to fall in love with food. From ravioli’s to gnocchi’s, from tagliatelle to lasagna, Italian cuisine is a culinary gift to the world. When I returned to Lahore, I suddenly realized that there was a gap in the local frozen food space.
There were lots of options for fried chicken variations, or even some pan-asian options, but nothing with the nuance or texture of the Tuscan delights I had just experienced! So I rolled up my sleeves, did some research and after endless trial-and-error, finally got it right (I hope!).
The frozen line is available so that its easily accessible to everyone to make whenever the craving hits. And given that its fresh pasta, it cooks within 3-5 minutes. Organic, fresh, homemade pasta envelops rich, subtle flavours shaped into ravioli – those who eat well, eat Italian.
What ravioli flavours do you have? For now, we have launched three Ravioli’s. I’d describe all as deliciously cheesy, rich tasting and with a complex but nuanced flavour profile. The Spinach, Parmesan and Feta with Lemon Zest has been wildly popular, and the Ricotta, Feta & Fresh basil with Caramelized Onion is a close second, but personally my favourite!
The new launch of Broccoli, Double Mozzarella & Feta is a limited edition, seasonal variety that is very, very hard to put down!
Why did you choose these specific flavours? There’s a plethora of food choices out there catering to the mirch-masala segment and honestly, I crave my masala fries fix as much as the next Lahori but, when I started making pasta I felt it was important to stay true to its Italian roots.
Our flavours use artisan cheese and hints of fresh herbs. We use organic vegetables, most which are grown at home. The taste is remarkably different from the store-bought variety – these flavours truly do justice to Italian cuisine how its meant to be eaten.
How has the response to this new product been so far? Honestly, the ravioli has received an overwhelmingly positive response! I am so grateful and really feel humbled by my customers who are always reaching out to give me positive feedback, post videos on their Instagram’s and get the word out about The Kimchi Girl. I know social media can be a double-edged sword, but it feels great to get so many positive reviews.
