Straight out a JAW movie? Shark swallowed camera; revealing what it’d be like inside of it

What happened: Zimy Da Kid, a conservationist and filmmaker, was filming a documentary in the Maldives earlier this month when he was approached by an inquisitive tiger shark, who evidently swallowed his 360-degree camera. Despite being devoured by the predator, the camera miraculously survived, allowing a fascinating look into the shark’s mouth, including its gills and teeth. Details: The footage was shot in Fuvahmulah, which is located south of the Maldives and has a large population of tiger sharks. “I put my Insta360 on a weight and dropped it on the sand. The shark was inquisitive,” Zimy told The Independent about the extraordinary encounter. “When he spotted this shiny thing, he must’ve thought to himself, ‘Let me taste it,’ and bit the camera.”

Why it matters: The 29-year-old expressed his desire to shift the public’s unfavourable impression of predators, explaining: “Sharks bite people not because they want to eat them, but because they see someone which intrigues them.”  Sharks in ecosystem: The cameraman also hopes to inspire people to care for the environment by emphasising the relevance of sharks in the ocean’s ecosystem. “I started recording sharks because they are vanishing at an alarming rate, which will be disastrous for the ocean,” he explained. “If sharks become extinct, the ocean’s entire ecosystem will collapse.”
