What happened: The Sindh cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, resolved on Thursday to appoint 1500 interns as college teachers in government institutions across the province. Details: According to the provincial government, there is a severe shortage of subject specialists for grades 9th and 10th in 318 higher secondary schools. The officials informed the cabinet that their requisition had been sent to the Sindh Public Service Commission. But as it would take time to get approved it could cost them academic points. The cabinet then approved the recruitment of interns on a ‘need-by-school’ basis, and mandated the hiring to be on merit. The cabinet further ordered that the hiring wouldn’t include regularisation or appointment on any contractual grounds. What else: The cabinet also approved a monthly stipend of Rs.50,000 for the intern college teachers. Out of 1500 interns, 240 will be hired for physics, 240 for chemistry, 120 teachers for mathematics, 120 for botany and zoology, 240 for English, 60 for Pakistan Studies, and the remaining 60 would be recruited for Islamiat, Sindhi, and Urdu.
