Cocaine, MDMA, and opioids decriminalized in Canada to help tackle drug abuse 

What happened:  As Reuters had earlier reported, Canada would temporarily decriminalize the possession of a few illegal drugs, including cocaine, to tackle the rising drug abuse problem that is widespread. However, the drugs would still be illegal, but the individuals found in possession of 2.5 grams of either cocaine, MDMA, or opioids will not be charged or arrested.  Details:  It is pertinent to mention that Canada’s western province is the epicenter for overdose cases. The province has requested the federal government to take prompt action on the matter. Reuters quotes Canada’s Federal Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Carolyn Bennett,  “Eliminating criminal penalties for those carrying small amounts of illicit drugs for personal use will reduce stigma and harm and provide another tool for the British Columbia to end the overdose crisis in Canada.”
