A historic change in Saudi Arabia will now witness its women as taxi drivers

What happened: Saudi General Directorate of Traffic stated on Jan 9 that women, aged 18 and above, will now be able to drive cabs in the Kingdom as they can apply for a general taxi license. Details: King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Saudi ruler, stated on September 27, 2017, that women would be allowed to drive in the country, and on June 24, 2019, the permit for the drivers’ license for women was granted. Under the new directives, women above 18 can apply at driving schools, which are located in Riyadh, Jeddah, Jazan, Asir, Najran, Jouf, Hail, and Taif, among other places, with the licence registration fee set at SR 200 ($53).  Why it matters: Since being granted the freedom to drive in 2017, Saudi women have been able to pursue a variety of transportation-related occupations, including driving trains, planes, and even racing vehicles, but following the new verdict, they can also work for online tax applications like Uber and Careem.
