17 year-old Jazlan’s murder was not an ‘act of terrorism’, rules ATC

Details: An anti-terrorism court on October 11 ordered the investigating officer in the case to present a final charge sheet before a sessions court after ruling that the death of 17 year-old Jazlan Faisal was not an “act of terrorism.”  ATC-XVI judge on a request made by the attorney for one of the defendants. Previously: Muhammad Faiz, his sons Hasnain, Irfan, and Ahsan, as well as their friend Inshal, have been charged with killing Jazlan in Bahria Town, Karachi. Mushtaq Ahmed, Hasnain’s attorney, filed an application under Section 23 of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1997 (the power to transfer cases to regular courts), claiming that the case was exempt from Section 7’s prohibition on the punishment of terrorist activities. Argument: Mr. Ahmed contended that because there was no “terrorist” offence committed, the current court lacked the authority to accept the charge sheet.
