Policy Level Changes for Acceptance of Transgenders – A TRANsition Event

CSC Empowerment and Inclusion Programme (CEIP) works towards bringing about economic empowerment to deprived communities that have traditionally been denied access to adequate means of reducing poverty.

CEIP recently launched their TRANSition project with partners; The Gender Guardian and Go Green Welfare Society . Since 1989, the organization has been working towards the empowerment of the marginalized, particularly women, through its growing network of microfinance branches and services in Central and South Punjab. Acknowledging the problems faced by the transgender community, CEIP has decided to extend its services to the community through the project by disbursing bikes to them. It hopes that this would help these vulnerable individuals in their economic pursuits by making mobility easier for them.

The launching event took place on 17th August at Pearl Continental, Lahore.

The program started with members of the transgender community singing the national anthem, followed by a theatrical performance that highlighted the issues faced by this community.  To create awareness on the vulnerability of transgenders in our society and to highlight the efforts made on an institutional level, a panel discussion was organized on ‘Policy level changes for acceptance of Transgenders.’ The panel consisted of the chief guest Dr. Muhammad Amjad Saqib (Akhuwat), Nighat Dad (Digital Rights Foundation), Fauzia Viqar (Punjab Commision on the Status of Women), Zenith Irfan (motorcycle girl) and Anila Saleem (Women Chambers of Commerce Lahore). The keys were distributed by the panelists to the transgenders and they expressed their desire to see them succeed in life. Ms. Shaista Jan (CEO, CEIP) presented tokens of appreciation to the guests of honor for their support and participation in the event.
