What happened: The US Federal Aviation Administration has revoked a YouTuber, Trevor Jacob’s pilot licence after finding out that he deliberately crashed his plane for likes and views. Back story: Jacob was flying above California’s Los Padres national forest in his single-engine plane on November 24, 2021, when his propeller failed. Seated in the cockpit, the influencer pilot filmed himself, saying, “I’m over the mountains and I… have an engine out.” He then jumped out of the plane, with a selfie stick before landing in an open field with his parachute. The vlog: Jacob recorded the entire incident and released it to YouTube, titled, ‘I Crashed My Plane.’ The video has received 2.2 million views since it was released online in Dec 2021. The empty plane can be seen flying towards the mountains before crashing into the countryside. FAA’s inquiry: “On November 24, 2021, you demonstrated a lack of care, judgement, and responsibility by choosing to jump out of an aircraft solely so you could record the footage of the crash,” the Federal Aviation Administration concluded its investigation into the incident on April 11, saying. Evidence: The FAA based its decision on the fact that Jacob had installed many cameras on the outside of his plane, including one pointed at the propeller, “in order to record video footage of the outside and inside of the plane during the flight.” What’s next: The FAA has revoked Jacob’s pilot licence and warned him in a six-page letter that if he fails to surrender his certificates, he will be subject to further legal enforcement action, including a civil penalty of up to $1,644.00 for each day he fails to surrender it.
