What happened: The scientists have discovered an invertebrate that has the most legs on earth. The new species of millipede that lives 200-feet underground and has no eyes have been found by Australian scientists. Millipede has been named after the Greek goddess “Eumillipes Persephone” and is the world’s first true millipede. Details: Australian scientists have discovered the threadlike pale-coloured millipede and are 95 millimetres long with a conical head and beak-shaped mouth with a large antenna. One of Virginia Tech’s entomologists Paul Marek is quoted by a publication, “Previously no known millipede actually had 1,000 legs despite the name millipede meaning a thousand feet.”

More: Another co-author and a principal biologist, Bennelongia Environmental Bruno Buzzatto, said, “In my opinion, this is a stunning animal, a marvel of evolution!” Until now, the leggiest animal is known as a California millipede species called Illacme plenipes, which only had 750 legs. On the other hand, the 1,036 legged millipede lives in complete darkness in a subterranean habitat and does not have eyes while it belongs to a family of fungi-eating millipedes.
