Why The Latest Episode of Game of Thrones Episode May Have Gone Too Far

So if the title hadn’t given you the hint, MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD FOR GAMES OF THRONES SEASON 8 EPISODE 4, SO TURN AROUND BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE.

Okay now that you’ve stayed, let’s talk about the latest episode of everyone’s favorite show. So after the year’s long build-up to the Great War with the white walker, everyone expected this episode to be another filler.

However, we couldn’t have been more wrong!

Well let’s just dive into it; Missandei is killed by The Mountain, on Cersei’s orders, by the end of the episode. Now literally everyone dies in this show, so it really shouldn’t be that impossible to think that another would too. But it’s the fact that the Game of Thrones has been accused of only writing for a White-narrative that makes this death even more hurtful.

Now there’s only one

Missandei was the last of only two people of colour in the whole ensemble cast. With her death, that leaves only Grey Worn in a show full of such amazing (BUT WHITE) characters. The major problem with this is that representation in media, even in fantasy, help create an individual’s perception of the world.

Constantly seeing people of colour in the sideline, as secondary, creates the impression of an all-white world.

It’s not just that she died; it’s how and why

So like any television shows, characters have arches. They all serve a purpose to the story, and when that purpose is gone, they go too. We see this happen all the time, including Game of Thrones. But you need to recognize the real world implications of what you are showing. AGAIN SPOILERS. Missandei is killed while as prisoner, beheaded, in chains. She’s the closest person to a Black character in this show, and look what they’ve done.

This is actually a pretty common troupe; the tragic person of colour (usually black), just there to serve the white protagonists story. The Help (2011) is a really big example-how the sad stories of a black maid moves the white person into doing the right thing. In this case, Missandei is a pawn to push Dany into “Mad Queen” mode, and to hurt her.

She is a pawn, a tool, and that too in someone else’s story.

It also shows to you how a show with such strong female characters (Arya, Dany, Cersei and so on), can have such problems with race. This “white-feminism” worldview literally sullies the shows reputation. But this applies to the men too. They haven’t been able to show any character of colour live, beside Grey Worm. While race isn’t really talked about, the more ethnic characters (Dorathki, characters from Dorne) are one dimensional at first, and then when they show development, kill them.

What now though?

Nothing really, I’m still going to watch the show as if nothing happened. It’s just too good. But I do want to leave you with one interesting nugget I heard.

The creators next big project, Confederate, in literally about if the South had won the American Civil War. That may be interesting-let’s hope they finally give people of colour their just representation.
