Yesterday the Punjab government granted permission to opposition political parties for holding a rally at Gujranwala’s Jinnah Stadium on Friday, October 16. This is going to be the first public demonstration of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) that wants to oust the PTI-led government What it is: PDM is an alliance of 11 political parties that are seeking out the government’s dismissal by launching a three-phased anti-government movement under an “action plan”. Multiple public meetings will be held across the country to mobilize the workers for the long march expected in January 2021. Why it is happening: PDM is vowing to oust the incumbent government for its “failures in all sectors”, stated Fazlur Rehman. According to the organizer, this movement is against the incompetence of the PTI government to control the poverty ratio and discriminatory persecution of opposition leaders. Furthermore, the alliance’s steering committee wants to replace the current civil-military hybrid regime with a secular-shariah hybrid regime.
