On Monday night, US Democrat Nancy Pelosi called Trump “morbidly obese” when discussing his decision to take hydroxychloroquine to sheath off COVID-19 concerns.
Speaking to a CNN correspondent, she asserted that she would “rather he (President Trump) not be taking something that has not been approved by the scientists… especially in his age group, and in his, shall we say, weight group, morbidly obese…”
Her response tends to reflect solidarity with the World Health Organization, which has reiterated the potentially damaging effects of hydroxychloroquine on the heart and the lack of data of the drug as a treatment for the coronavirus.
However, critics claimed that Pelosi’s “fat-phobic” statements may have downplayed the severity of Trump’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and instead reinstated the stigma surrounding obesity. It is no surprise that prescriptions of antimalarial drugs advocated by Trump have skyrocketed by 46 times the average.
