Wearing jeans cost a 17-year-old girl her life in India

What happened: Neha Paswan, a 17-year-old girl, from Uttar Pardesh was allegedy killed at the hands of her relatives’ beating for wearing jeans. Details: She belonged to a village in Deoria district, which is one of the poorest developed district in the state. Her mother reported the incident to BBC Hindi, narrating that her daughter was beaten to death with sticks by her grandfather and uncles. Neha stood up to her relatives when they objected her dressing in jeans to celebrate her day-long religious fast, the argument between her and her relatives soon turned physically violent. Hanged from a bridge: Neha’s mother says her daughter was unconscious from the beating when her in-laws supposedly took her to the hospital in a rickshaw. However, till the next day Neha’s mother could not find any record of her daughter at the hospital and a body hanging from the bridge over the Gandak river was soon discovered by the police. The body turned out to be Neha’s. The family had not taken the unconscious Neha to a hospital but rather hanged her. Four arrested: The police in connection to Neha’s murder, has arrested four people. These include her grandparents, the uncle and the rickshaw driver. Nehas’s parents are left distraught and confused at the brutality their daughter was killed with. Her mother recalls that Neha dreamt of being a police officer, and her father laments that he worked hard as a labourer to make sure his children including Neha could be educated at school.
