“We Should Shake Hands With Israel,” Mubashar Luqman on i24News in Tel Aviv, 2020

Pakistan is one of the 28 UN member states that do not recognize Israel. The Pakistani passport bears the inscription, “This passport is valid for all countries except Israel,” banning Pakistanis from traveling to the belligerent state that routinely commits war crimes against Palestine. In the past, the U.S., India, and Saudi Arabia have pressurized Pakistan to recognize Israel as an official state. Last year in November, while talking to the Israeli international news channel i24NEWS English, Pakistani journalist Mubashar Lucman echoed the same sentiment in the words, “We should shake hands with Israel.”

What Happened: When asked about his “personal perspective on the possibility of Israel Pakistan relations on some level or the other,” Lucman responded: “We should think of Pakistan first and what is important to our country and we should stop fighting other people’s fights and war. I am one of those people who believe that we should shake hands and have diplomatic ties.” Lucman further went on to say, “Israel is a very, very vibrant country. The Israeli nation is a great nation, I have no doubts about that. In their own way, they are fighters and survivors.” The Response: Israel’s apartheid regime and settler-colonialism in Palestine have always enraged Pakistanis, who were outraged at Lucman’s statements.
