VW pulls Golf car ad over racism row

Share

The German automobile giant, Volkswagen has rescinded their Golf car ad from social media and apologised for it’s the racism undertones.

Following the advertisement’s withdrawal from their official Instagram page, the car giant assured that they would investigate how the incident had come about. They further claimed they had been “horrified” (cite guardian) and local television networks said the hand in the ad could be symbolic of “ white power.”

What was the ad?

The advert featured a woman’s huge, white hand that shuns a black man from a yellow Golf on the street and it also spotlights a cafe called “ Petit Colon,” which bears colonial connotations.

Volkswagen stands defiant against racism considering its reputation had gone downhill when it confessed to cheating diesel emission checks, five years ago. The response also comes off particularly defiant keeping in mind the company’s history of employing forced labour under Adolf Hitler’s orders in Nazi Germany.
