Uyghurs and other minorities face “forced -labour” in solar-grade polysilicon factories in China

What happened: Ads for the top producer of metallurgical-grade silicon (MGS), Hoshine Silicon, ask for only applicants who speak Mandarin, have clean political record, and are able to “bear hardships”. According to research, state labour programs recruit residents as a form of forced-labour which applicants can not refuse due to detention and other threats. Muslims in the Xinjiang region, are especially at risk of repression from solar companies in China. What can be done : The presence of forced-labour in solar supply chains is a source of concern for many companies. As looking for suppliers in other countries can be too expensive, companies are trying to find Chinese suppliers that “ethnically source” materials and do not depend on forced labour.
