US Snubs China Over ‘Brutal’ Treatment Of Muslim Minorities

The US will blacklist 28 Chinese entities that are allegedly involved in the abuse and rights violations of Uighurs and other Muslim minorities in the Xinjiang region The ostracized organizations include video surveillance company Hikvision, along with artificial intelligence companies Megvii Technology and SenseTime, according to the US Federal Register. These entities will no longer be able to purchase US products.

“The United States cannot and will not tolerate the brutal suppression of ethnic minorities within China,” said Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross.

It’s likely the decision is partly because of rising tensions between US and China, particularly over trade policy and Beijing’s actions in the western
Xinjiang region. The two economic superpowers are battling out a trade war after exchanging punitive tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars in bilateral trade. The White House announced talks between the countries would resume on Thursday, however in the meantime the US is stepping up its decision against Beijing’s policies in Xinjiang.
