The impeachment enquiry against US President Donald Trump is ongoing with Congress looking into allegations of wrongdoing.
The impeachment inquiry is centred around whether Trump pressured the Ukrainian President to investigate former Vice-President Joe Biden and his son Hunter by threatening to detain $400 million in military aid. Thus far, three witnesses have testified in the case including acting US ambassador to Ukraine Bill Taylor, deputy assistant secretary for Europe and Euroasian affairs George Kent and former US ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch. Nine more witnesses are scheduled for the upcoming weeks. Secretary Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said that it is unlikely that the impeachment hearings will end before 2020. Trump has claimed that he is considering submitting a testimony himself. Throughout the hearings, Trump has been quick to criticise the procedure and witnesses via a series of bizarre tweets equating the hearings to a ‘witch hunt’ and questioning the competence of one of the witnesses. During Marie Yovanovitch’s hearing, she was even given the opportunity to respond to his tweet in real time.
