One of two American veterans detained after a failed invasion coup by Venezuelan security forces has appeared on state television in the South American nation.

Luke Denman is shown looking directly at the camera and describing his alleged role in what the Maduro government claims is a “failed coup” attempt organized by US security firm Silvercorp. Jordan Goudreau, head of Florida-based security company SilverCorp USA and a US military veteran, has claimed responsibility for the incursion. Goudreau said he was working with two US citizens in an operation designed to capture, not kill, Maduro and “liberate” Venezuela.

Venezuela’s government described the clip as a “confession”. Denman was detained on Monday alongside fellow US military veteran Aaron Berry. Both men are former US special forces soldiers.

Denman, 34, in the video statement from an undisclosed location, answered questions from a person off-camera speaking in English. Denman said his mission was to secure the airport and establish a security perimeter
and bring in a plane to fly President Nicolas Maduro to the United States,
though it was unclear how he planned to get Maduro on a plane.
