What happened: Sources claim that on May 12, Pakistan’s first transgender lawyer Nisha Rao was attacked in Saddar, Karachi by 4 men. Rao sustained a few injuries as well.
Details: Trans Pride Society, founded by Nisha herself, narrated the incident as a ‘heinous crime.’ They claim that 4 men on two motorbikes attacked her as she got off a rickshaw to reach a friend’s apartment. The perpetrators stole her handbag and mobile phone as well, “One aggressor used the ring he was wearing to pierce Nisha’s scalp.” Why it matters: Journalist Arshad Yousufzai says that IG Sindh should act instantly and arrest the culprits, “Transgenders and HRDs are being targeted for their human rights,” he added. In Apr 2021, 5 transgender persons were killed and 8 sustained injuries in seperate attacks, and these are just the cases that were reported. Why it matters: Nisha Rao is Pakistan’s first trangender lawyer to be accepted into an MPhil programme to study law at Karachi University.
