Previously, the United States was the largest donor to the WHO but President Donald Trump has announced that funds to the World Health Organisation have been suspended.
The WHO global drugs, vaccine initiative launch will not include the United States. The initiative will be launched by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday to help in the development of a vaccine. The WHO said that this would be a “landmark collaboration” to speed up the development of safe, effective drugs, tests and vaccines to prevent, diagnose and treat COVID-19.
British foreign minister Dominic Raab and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres are also to take part led by WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom.
A spokesman for the United States wrote in a email, “There will be no U.S. official participation. We look forward to learning more about this initiative in support of international cooperation to develop a vaccine for COVID-19 as soon as possible.”
