Tokyo Medical School admits to altering results to exclude women for over a decade

Tokyo Medical University, one of Japan’s top medical schools, has admitted to manipulating entrance exam scores since 2006 to limit female admissions and favor male students.

Initially denying the issue, the school now acknowledges the wrongdoing and pledges to prevent future occurrences.

They are considering retroactive admissions for those who would have passed under fair conditions, though details are not yet clear.

“We sincerely apologise for the serious wrongdoing involving entrance exams that has caused concern and trouble for many people and betrayed the public’s trust,” the school’s managing director, Tetsuo Yukioka, said at a news conference. He denied any previous knowledge of the score manipulation and said he was never involved.

“I suspect that there was a lack of sensitivity to the rules of modern society, in which women should not be treated differently because of their gender,” he said.
