Govt High School Narowal received thousands of free textbooks from the Punjab government for grades VI to X for the academic year starting in February. The books never reached the children, however, as for some reason, the school administration did not issue them to the students.
All the books granted by the government were placed in an unused classroom and left to rot, covered in dust when discovered. As a result of no books provided, students then had to purchase costly books from the market. The discarded books’ fate will likely end up in the hands of local scrap dealers.
A similar incident took place a few years ago as well, as only a few books were issued to some students while the rest went untouched and later sold as scrap. Not only is this added expense for students, but also a waste of money and thousands of rupees of the provincial government.
Parents and students have complained to concerned authorities who have been blaming each other for the negligence. A District Education Officer defended the school by saying that the books discarded were not required by the school.
