What happened: Unmarked graves of hundreds of indigenous children have been discovered in Canada at the sites of controversial former “Residential Schools”. This discovery has reopened painful wounds for indigenous and other communities in Canada. The anger Canadians feel over this horrific past has led to burning of Catholic Churches and toppling statues of Queen Victoria and Elizabeth. Details: For over a 100 years till 1996 Catholic Church run “Residential Schools” separated indigenous children from their families and communities to turn them civil and white. This was a state-sponsored or more aptly Colonial-sponsored “genocide”. The children were taken to these schools, which in real became torture houses for them. The children were kept malnourished, physically, sexually, and mentally abused. And as we know now hundreds of indigenous children were killed at the hands of these Residential Schools which were run by the Catholic Church and funded by the government. Protests have taken place all over Canada on Canada Day in solidarity with and anger over these grave injustices to Canada’s indigenous people. Mostly participants of these protests dressed in orange colour, which has become the colour of this movement.
