The Former First Lady of Pakistan – Kulsoom Nawaz

Nawaz Sharif’s wife, Maryam Nawaz’s mother and former thrice made first lady of Pakistan Kulsoom Nawaz breathed her last in her London on September 11th, 2018. Her husband and daughter, Nawaz and Maryam, have been released on parole in order to attend her funeral scheduled to take place in Lahore.

Kulsoom Nawaz had been unwell for the past several months through the public and controversial arrest of her husband and daughter. Here is a quick timeline of her life and her role in the politics of Pakistan.

1950 : She is born as Kulsoom Rehana to a well-endowed family in Lahore to two siblings. Her maternal grandfather Ghulam Mohammad Baksh nicknamed The Great Gama was known as one of the best wrestlers of the time. 1970 : Kulsoom Nawaz completes her graduate studies from University of Punjab later to finish her Masters from Forman Christian College.

1971: Kulsoom marries Nawaz Sharif in April of 1971. The two later have 4 children together.

1990-97 : Nawaz Sharif becomes the Prime Minister making Kulsoom the first-lady for the first time. Within the next 7 years, Sharif is elected again making his wife the first lady again. 1999 : After a Pervez Musharraf exiles Sharif from the country, Kulsoom is arrested for leading various rallies within the city. She takes the lead on protests voicing her disagreement towards Musharraf’s regime. 1999 : Sharif continues to be in exile as Kulsoom takes over PML-N and stays in that position for 3 years. 2013 : Nawaz Sharif returns to Pakistan and is elected as Prime Minister making his wife first lady once more. 2017 : Kulsoom Nawaz is diagnosed with Lymphoma and is moved to London for a more thorough form of treatment. 2018 June : Amidst the Panama papers chaos Kulsoom is said to suffer from a cardiac arrest and is moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Harley Street Clinic. She continues to stay unconscious and on the ventilator until her demise.

September 11, 2018 : Kulsoom Nawaz passes away in London at the hospital at the age of 68.
