What happened: During a raid on Feb 3, two leopard cats were recovered by the Sindh Wildlife Department from Karachi’s birds market in Empress Market, and arrested the man selling them. Details: SWD raid team was notified through social media posts shared by social activists that someone was selling leopards at the site. Both cats were set at a price of Rs200,000 each. Officials with the SWD said they have no idea how the cats were carried to the city from the country’s northern regions, “Where and how these leopards were smuggled to the city is being investigated,” SWD province chief Javed Ahmed Mahar stated.  The arrest: Inspector Muhammad Naeem Khan said, “The man was arrested, and the property (cats) was confiscated.” He noted that recovering the cats was not an easy task, “The cats were kept in an empty room.”  What’s next: Both leopard cats will be handed over to the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board for rehabilitation and release into the wild in a secure manner. Mahar confirmed that all official requirements have been fulfilled, “We can’t keep these cats anyplace in Sindh,” adding that leopards’ natural habitat is the Margala Hills.
