Russian government to ban Instagram access amid Ukraine’s invasion

What happened: On March 11, the Russian government announced that Instagram would be banned in the country after Meta said that it would allow users affected by the war to write posts calling for violence against  “Russian invaders.”  At the same time, the Russian media regulator has said that the platform users will have till midnight on Monday to transfer their data from the platform to other platforms. Whereas, it is pertinent to mention that the country has already blocked access to Facebook and Twitter.  Details: On the other hand, the CEO of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, is quoted by CBS News as,  “The decision would affect 80 million users. This is wrong. Banning Instagram is cutting off million of people from loved ones and friends around the world.”  At the same time, Adam Mosseri announced that the platform plans to offer encrypted chats in Russia.  More: Subsequently, CBS News quotes a Meta spokesperson as,  “Meta originally announced the removal of its violent speech ban to allow those affected by war, to express violent sentiments toward invading armed forces.”  However, many western brands have also halted their operations in the country as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues.
