Russian court believes ‘Meta and Facebook is guilty of extremist activity’

What happened: A court in Moscow ruled that Facebook and Meta have been promoting extremist content and are guilty of extremist activity. The ruling comes when Facebook and Instagram have already banned their services in Russia as the country’s invasion of Ukraine continues.     However, Meta is yet to challenge the decision by the Moscow court.  Details: At the same time, on March 21, the Communications Regulator of Russia is quoted by Reuters,  “We will exclude Meta from the list of foreign entities operating on the internet in Russia, and Instagram and Facebook from the register of social networks.”  Whereas, Facebook is believed to have more than seven million users in Russia and Instagram has nearly 80 million users in the country.  What you need to know: All these developments come at a time when Russia has started their invasion of Ukraine and the situation in Ukraine worsens. However, the Meta operated WhatsApp has not been banned by the Moscow court,  “The decision does not apple to the activities of Meta’s messenger WhatsApp, due to its lack of functionality for the public dissemination of information.”
