Quarantine before COVID-19: ancient isolation rooms found in caves

What happened: 81 ancient isolation chambers that are carved in caves have been discovered in Oman. They are said to be used to isolate patients of plague and smallpox in the olden days.

“The aim of these quarries was to reduce the spread of disease among the population,” said the Omani Ministry of Heritage and Tourism in a statement.

Details: The caves have many chambers and corridors making it a complex structure used to help stop spreads of infectious diseases. The Omani Directorate General of Antiquities is going to be adding this discovery and researching more on it as part of their efforts to document historically significant sites.
