What happened: On Apr 21, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered ‘foolproof security’ for former premier Imran Khan as he reportedly received death threats ahead of his Lahore jalsa today. Details: PM Shehbaz urged the Interior Ministry to adopt urgent and effective security measures, and ordered Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah to personally oversee and guarantee that his directives are implemented. The ministry issued an emergency letter to the home secretaries of the four provinces, as well as Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, mandating strong security measures for Imran. The inspector general and chief commissioner of Islamabad were also given instructions by the Interior Ministry. What else: According to an urgent notice from the ministry, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief should be given rigorous security wherever he goes in the country, and security authorities should take all required precautions, including bomb disposal at his Bani Gala mansion. It further stated that security failures during Imran Khan’s rallies, processions, and public events would not be tolerated. What you need to know: In a letter to the PTI leadership a day earlier, Lahore Additional Deputy Commissioner Atiyab Sultan suggested that due to “serious threat alerts,” Imran should address the Lahore rally virtually today at Minar-e-Pakistan. The PTI Chief in his Twitter space said, “I will 100% come to the venue, no matter what.”
