What happened: On May 26, Jacinda Ardern, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, used her Harvard University Commencement address to condemn the “scourge of falsehood” and to echo former Pakistan Prime Minister Mohatarma Benazir Bhutto’s plea to enhance democracy.
Details: PM Ardern has followed in the footsteps of Ms Bhutto, as they were the first two female heads of government to give birth while in office, with Ms Ardern doing so on Ms Bhutto’s birthday. She also recalled their meeting in Switzerland in June 2007, shortly before Ms Ardern’s election to parliament and seven months before Ms Bhutto’s death, “The road she (Benazir) carved as a woman feels as vital today as it did decades ago and so does the message she conveyed here in this place.”
