PM Imran Khan to become first Pakistani leader to visit Russia in over two decades

What happened: On February 7, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi stated that nearly after 23 years, a Pakistani leader would make his visit to Russia. It is pertinent to mention the last Pakistani leader to visit Russia was Nawaz Sharif in 1999 when he paid a visit to Moscow months before the military coup.

Details: According to the foreign ministry, Russian president Vladimir Putin invited the Pakistani counterpart at the end of February. In a bid to improve relations between the two countries and improve trading relations the visit has been scheduled and The News quotes the development as, “During his stay in Russia, the prime minister will hold important meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and other top leaders of the country.”

More: Shah Mehmood Qureshi is quoted by Pakistan Daily as,  “Our relations with Russia have gradually improved. Now Putin has invited Khan to visit Russia and the prime minister will go to Moscow this month.”  Reports suggest that the two leaders would also talk about the evolving situation in Afghanistan as well as the 1-100km long Pakistan Steam Gas Pipeline.
