Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has started direct flights from Karachi to Skardu to promote tourism in Gilgit-Baltistan.

What Happened: It was announced by Gilgit Baltistan Governor Raja Jalal Hussain Maqpoon in a press release that direct flights from Karachi to Skardu had been launched to encourage tourism in the region and facilitate the local people. He also said that international flights will be launched from Gilgit-Baltistan in the future to further boost the region’s tourism sector. The first PIA Airbus-320 with 178 passengers and eight crew members landed at the Skardu Airport on Monday. The airline will operate two weekly flights from Karachi to Skardu. The Response: The initiative has been welcomed by people who see it as an effort to elevate the tourism potential of the region.
