At Expo 2020 Dubai, PepsiCo Pakistan made an exciting announcement regarding plastic recycling. The announcement was made in collaboration with Novatex Limited for conducting test trials to recycle plastic bottles for the Pakistani market. Both entities signed an MoU for this joint initiative in the presence of the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister of Pakistan on Climate Change Mr. Malik Amin Aslam.
Together, PepsiCo and Novatex Limited have committed to developing innovative and scaled solutions to tackle the crisis of plastic waste in Pakistan. PepsiCo and Novatex Limited have already collected and recycled over 5,000 tons of plastic and going forward the companies will work together on significantly scaling up the collection of used plastic bottles and commercialising the use of bottles made from recycled plastics in Pakistan.
In Pakistan, PepsiCo has been ambitiously working towards driving positive change for the planet and people. The company has launched several meaningful programs to encourage a circular economy and to move towards its vision of a sustainable environment where packaging does not become waste. These initiatives correlate with PepsiCo’s recently announced global Pep+ (PepsiCo Positive) agenda for strategic end-to-end transformation with sustainability at the heart of how the company will create growth and shared value. Earlier this year, PepsiCo launched one of the largest plastic waste collection programs in the country. The company is also offering consumers an easy way to recycle plastic bottles by launching the first-of-its-kind ‘Reverse Vending Machine’ in Islamabad. This machine allows consumers to get discounts for food outlets in exchange for used plastic bottles. In addition to this initiative, PepsiCo recently launched a ‘direct from home’ collection scheme in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, through which consumers are given free bulk water refills in exchange for used plastic bottles.
