People We Lost in 2018


While we are all looking forward to ringing in the new year, there are some people who left us in 2018. So before we move on, lets take some time to remember those individuals who’s journey ended in 2018. 

1. Zubaida Tariq Ilyas

Commonly known as Zubaida Aapa, she was a chef and cooking expert. She was the first celebrity cook of Pakistan, appearing on numerous TV shows, and was also known for her desi totkas.

2. Mohammad Asghar Khan

Asghar Khan was Pakistani politician and an autobiographer, later a dissident serving for the cause of pacifism, peace, and the human rights.

3. Rasa Chughtai

Rasa Chugtai was a Pakistani Urdu poet who was known for Zanjeer-e-Hamsaigi and Tere Aane Ka Intezaar Raha

4. Sardar Ahmed Ali Khan Pitafi

Ahmed Ali Khan was a Pakistani politician and a member of Pakistan Peoples Party. He served as a member of Provincial Assembly of Sindh between 1988-90, 1993-96, 2008-13 and 2013-18.

5. Fariha Razzaq Haroon

Fariha Razzaq was a Pakistani politician and journalist who was also a member of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh from 2002 to 2007.

6. Asma Jilani Jahangir

Asma Jahangir was a Pakistani human rights lawyer and social activist who co-founded and chaired the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.

7. Qazi Wajid

Qazi Wajid was a Pakistani actor who died in Karachi on 11 February 2018. After 25 years on radio, he resigned to pursue a career as an actor.

8. Muhammad Ashiq

Muhammad Ashiq was a Pakistani cyclist who competed at the 1960 and the 1964 Summer Olympics. He started his career as a boxer but after a fight, where he received many injuries, he switched his career to cycling. Later in his life he worked as a rickshaw driver in Pakistan to make ends meet.

9. Muhammad Ayaz Soomro

Muhammad Ayaz was a Pakistani politician and lawyer, who was a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan, from June 2013 to March 2018. Previously he had been a member of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh from 2002 to 2007 and again from 2008 to 2013.

10. Madeeha Gauhar

Madeeha Gauhar was a Pakistani actress, playwright and director of social theater, and women’s rights activist. In 1983 she founded Ajoka Theatre where social themes were staged in theaters, on the street and in public spaces. With Ajoka she performed in Asia and Europe.

11. Mushtaq Ahmad

Mushtaq Ahmad was a Pakistani urdu satire and humour writer. Yousufi also served as the head of several national and international governmental and financial institutions.

12. Jamsheed Marker

Jamsheed Marker was a Pakistani diplomat with a 42-year diplomatic career. He was notable for his tenure as Ambassador to the United States, serving from 17 September 1986 to 30 June 1989 during the administrations of Prime Ministers Muhammad Khan Junejo and Benazir Bhutto.

13. Haroon Ahmed Bilour

Haroon Bilour was a Pakistani politician from Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He was the son of renowned politician Bashir Ahmed Bilour. He was killed in a suicide bombing during a party meeting in Peshawar on 10 July 2018.

14. Annie Ali Khan

Annie Ali Khan who was also known as Quratulain Ali Khan was a former Pakistani female model, writer and journalist. On 21 July 2018, she allegedly committed suicide at the age of 38 in Karachi.

15. Begum Kulsoom Nawaz Sharif

Kulsoom Nawaz was a Pakistani politician who had been the first lady of Pakistan for three non-consecutive terms; from 1990 to 1993, 1997 to 1999 and then from 2013 to 2017. She was also the President of Pakistan Muslim League from 1999 to 2002.

16. Anam Tanoli

The 26-year-old model from Lahore is remembered as a vibrant person, which makes her suicide another harsh reminder of the hidden nature of depression.

17. Tahir Chaudhry

A Pakistani chef and culinary expert, Tahir Chaudhry worked in Italy, France, and UAE before working in Pakistan. He was regarded as one of the top chefs in Pakistan and also worked with the culinary TV channel, Masala TV. He died of a cardiac arrest on 6 October 2018.

18. Maulana Sami ul Haq

Maulana Sami ul Haq was a Pakistani religious scholar and senator who was also known as the Father of Taliban in Pakistan. He was the member of the Senate of Pakistan from 1985 to 1991 and again from 1991 to 1997.

19. Fahmida Riaz

Fehmida Riaz was a progressive urdu writer, poet, human rights activist and feminist of Pakistan. She authored Godaavari, Khatt-e Marmuz, and Khana e Aab O Gil, the first translation of the Masnavi of Jalaluddin Rumi from Persian into Urdu.

20. Syed Ali Raza Abidi

Syed Ali Raza Abidi was a Pakistani politician who was a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from June 2013 to May 2018 and the former leader of the MQM.
