What happened: On May, 9, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) cautioned private electronic media against airing critical content based on the country’s military and judiciary. Details: “It has been noticed that a few satellite TV channels are airing programs that account to casting aspersions against state institutions, such as the armed forces and courts,” the regulating authority stated in guidelines released on Twitter, “Airing such content is in violation of Pemra guidelines; the Pemra Electronic Media (Programs and Advertisement) Code of Conduct 2015,” the notification further read. What else: According to the statement, freedom of speech and expression are fundamental rights that are subject to “legitimate constraints” imposed by legislation in the interest of Islam, Pakistan’s integrity, security, or defence. It cautioned that any “violation” would result in legal action under the relevant code of conduct.
