پروین شاکر شاید اردو کی سب سے معروف شاعرہ ہیں، ان کی شاعری نے اردو ادب میں احساسات و جذبات کی نزاکت کی ایک نئی روح پھونکی۔ شاکر نے چھوٹی عمر سے ہی لکھنا شروع کر دیا۔ وہ نوعمری میں نثر و شاعری لکھنے لگیں جو اردو اخبارات میں شائع بھی ہوئیں۔ اس زمانے میں انہوں نے تخلص “بینا” کا انتخاب کیا۔
شاکر نے زیادہ تر غزلیات اور آزاد نظمیں لکھیں، اور اپنے منفرد انداز سے آزاد نظموں میں عمدہ رنگ و احساسات بھرے۔ شاکر نے اپنی نجی زندگی سے متاثر ہو کر درد و رنج کے موضوعات پر شاعری کی۔ شاکر کی شادی طلاق پر ختم ہوئی اور اس دردناک دور کی عکاسی ان کے کلام میں واضح ہے۔ شاکر نے نجی رنج سے ایک آفاقی نسوانی درد کی طرف سفر طے کیا۔ ان کی شاعری نے عورتوں کی زندگی اور جذبات کی نمائیندگی اس وقت کی جب اردو ادب میں مرد شعراء کا راج تھا۔
