Palestinian residents in Jerusalem’s Silwan forced to evacuate and dismantle their own homes

What happened: On June 7, the Jerusalem municipality issued a series of expulsion and demolition orders to residents of the al-Bustan area in Silwan. The demolitions, which aim to make way for Jewish settlements, began following a June 28 deadline given to Palestinians to either demolish their own homes or pay demolition fees after Israel destroys them. How people reacted: Deputy Jerusalem Mayor Arieh King said “around 20” buildings in Silwan – which Israel refers to by its Hebrew name Shiloach – had received demolition orders. Many Palestinians have said that it is near impossible to get a building permit in the region. They view this act of demolition as propaganda to displace the local Palestinians and replace them with illegal Israeli settlers organisation that seeks to turn the land into a national park and link it to the archaeological City of David area.

According to Grassroots Jerusalem, a Palestinian NGO, both home demolitions and court-ordered forced displacements are tactics used to expel Palestinian residents.

According to a report by the Institute of Institute for Middle East Understanding [IMEU], 1,500 Palestinians including 935 children in the Al-Bustan area in Silwan are at risk of losing their homes because Israel wants to build a religious theme park. The Palestinians have reacted to this through peaceful protest and calls through mosque loudspeakers for residents to gather to protect their homes. However, Israeli occupation forces have reacted in violence using rubber-coated steel bullets and tear gas inhalation against protestors, leaving 13 Palestinians injured. Despite no legal or political action taken against the illegal occupation, many social media users have taken up action to call for immediate action to stop Israel’s ethnic cleansing under the hashtag #SaveSilwan
