Pakistani Women Making Waves in the News These past Few Weeks

It’s been a recent phenomenon when media has started paying attention to women. Acknowledging them and crediting them for their achievements. These past few weeks several women stood out in news. We decided to compile a list and celebrate these accomplished role models for women all over Pakistan.

Female pilots wh o flew to Gilgit

PIA’s two female pilots successfully landed a flight to Gilgit, which is considered one of the toughest routes.

They received huge amount of applaud but at the same time, the derogatory comments were in abundance too. Why we, as a society can’t appreciate our own women?

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy is a name that needs no introduction. Her latest project includes documenting the journey of a 15-year-old boy from Sialkot. QB’s  FIFA Anthem

In other FIFA news singer Qurat-ul-Ain Baloch aka QB collaborated with Jason Derulo to give FIFA anthem a Punjabi touch. Her FIFA cover is great and produced by Coca-Cola.  In the video Pakistani flag waves high and kids are playing in the streets of Karachi. This is a big achievement for a Pakistani artist as it celebrates the arrival of football in Pakistan.

Momina Mustehsan now making a mark in India 

Momina Mustehsan also collaborated with Indian singer-composer-actor Arjun Kanungo. The song has been well received, particularly given the ban on Pakistani artists in India. This duet gives artists hope for future collaborations.

Mehwish Hayat vs Bakhtawar Bhutto

This week was also Benazir Bhutto’s birthday. And Mehswish Hayat shared the message of working on BB’s biopic film. For any actor that’s a great honor, but this news didn’t sit well with former Prime Minister’s daughter. Bakhtwar Bhutto announced a legal action this announcement. Though Mehswish Hayat has tried clearing the air.

Armeena Khan Calls out Sheikh Rasheed

She is known for using social media for voicing her opinions. Recently Sheikh Rasheed made some derogatory marks about people in entertainment industry calling them prostitute and pimps. Armeena Khan, however, schooled him and reminded how a leader should behave on TV. Televison actress Mansha Pasha joined in as well.

Dr. Sarah Safdar, KPK’s Religious minister

For the first time, KPK selected a Christian woman as their interim religious minister. Dr. Sarah Safdar is the first woman from a minority group who also holds the social welfare and education portfolios in the interim cabinet.
