What happened: The Hindu Mandir Management Committee, Pakistan’s first-ever group of Hindu leaders, was formed by The Ministry of Religious Affairs on Dec 30 to look after the temples of the minority population. Details: Minister for Religious Affairs, Noor ul-Haq Qadri chaired the body’s inaugural meeting and The Executive Director of the Evacuee Trust Property Board, a statutory organisation that oversees Hindu and Sikh religious properties, Asif Hashmi informed the members about the issues faced by the minority community. Krishna Sharma will lead the all-Hindu group including Dewan Chand Chawla, Haroon Sarab Dayal, Mohandas, Naranjan Kumar, Megha Arora, Amit Shadani, Ashok Kumar, Versi Mill Dewani, and Amar Nath Randhawa. Why it matters: According to Qadri, the concerns of Pakistan’s minority population are being addressed on a priority basis, and the formation of the committee will aid in the resolution of difficulties affecting the Pakistani Hindu community. The minister went on to argue that, despite religious and cultural variety, humanity requires tolerance and acceptance of one another, and that ‘wicked’ groups in Pakistan seek confrontation based on religion, sect, and linguistics. What you need to know: Qadri further stated that efforts were being made for the welfare of the non-Muslim population in accordance with Prime Minister Imran Khan’s vision. Hindus are the largest minority group, who share their culture, traditions, and language with Muslim people, forming a population of 7.5 million, with Sindh housing the majority of them.
