“Omicron variant is hospitalising and killing people,” as WHO chief urges people to follow SOPs

What happened: The World Health Organization’s chief, Tedros Ghebreyesus, has warned that Covid’s Omicron variant should not be taken lightly. The head said it might be less severe than the Delta variant, but that does not mean it should be labeled  mild.  AFP quoted WHO’s Chief as,  “Just like previous variants, Omicron is hospitalising people and it is killing people.” Details: WHO also revealed the statistics of the positive cases reported after New Year’s eve as it quotes,  “Just under 9.5 million new Covid-19 cases were reported to the WHO last week, a record, up 71% on the week before.”  At the same time,  Tedros  said,  “In fact, the tsunami of cases is so huge and quick that it is overwhelming health systems around the world.”  In order to  end the death and destruction of COVID-19  Chief advised the  rich  nations to increase the rollout of the vaccinations. WHO claimed that the Omicron variant is  highly  transmissible as the cases regarding the variant are doubling every 1.5 to three days.  What’s happening in Pakistan? After Pakistan reported its first Omicron variant case on December 13 in Karachi, the nation has seen a rise in Covid positivity rate nationwide. On January 7, 1293, Covid positive cases were reported in the country as the positivity rate nationwide has also jumped above 2%, with more than 600 patients on critical care. The Omicron variant is also rapidly spreading across Pakistan, especially in the provincial capitals of Sindh and Punjab, as 60% of Covid positive cases are from Lahore and Karachi.
