Statistics obtained from the different organisations like the Police, Law, and Justice Commission of Pakistan, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, Women’s Foundation, and provincial welfare agencies show that a minimum of 11 rape cases are reported in Pakistan everyday. This adds up to approximately 22, 000 rape cases reported to the police in the last six years.
But, in contrast those convicted form only 0.3% of the total reported cases. Only 77 of those accused have been convicted for their crimes in the last six years. Police sources have surmised that only half of the rape cases are registered, and the actual number of rape cases is much higher. They estimated that the actual number of rapes that occurred in the last five years must be approximately 60, 000.
A Geo News investigation also revealed that only 41% of rape cases are reported to the police owing to the conservative nature of society and numerous loopholes in the law and order system that can be exploited by rapists.
Out of the total reported rape cases, only 12% were filed in court. Of those 2, 727 cases the court reached a decision in only 5% or 1, 274 of them. An alarming 1, 192 of those accused were acquitted by the court.
Official data shows that in the past six years, 18, 609 cases of rape were reported in Punjab, 1, 873 in Sindh, 1, 183 in KPK, 129 in Balochistan, 31 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan and 210 in the federal capital Islamabad.
