No petrol relief, but govt announces major tax relief of billions for smokers

What happened:  According to the Finance Act 2022, quoted by Tribune,  “The government has increased the threshold for higher duties on the expensive cigarette brands.”  It is pertinent to mention that before the budget was announced government charged 5200 rupees as excise duty per 1000 cigarettes if the printed retail was over 5960 rupees per 1000.  Then what happened:  Tribune further quotes the details as,  to offset the impact and bring a few expensive brands into the lower tax slab, it increased the taxable threshold for the upper brand cigarettes a benefit of 700 rupees on every 1000 cigarettes.”  More:  On the other hand, Country Lead on Tobacco Control at Vital Strategies, Dr. Ziauddin, quotes,  “The government has tricked the people who advocated increasing the tax burden to discourage smoking.”  At the same time, it is pertinent to mention that due to low tobacco taxes, Pakistan ranks among the worst-performing countries in  Tobacconomics.
