What happened: On Thursday, Olympic organizers notified that spectators will not be allowed to attend most Olympic events. The decision was taken after Tokyo’s declaration of a state of emergency in response to a sudden spike in coronavirus cases.

Details : The Japanese government put the capital, Tokyo, under a COVID-19 state of emergency because of rising new infections and the highly contagious delta variant. The decision was taken by the Japanese Prime Minister, Yoshihide Suga, and the audience ban was agreed to by Japanese Olympic organizers, the International Olympic Committee, the International Paralympic Committee, and the metropolitan government of Tokyo. Hence, the Olympics will be a largely TV-only event. A torch relay that was supposed to travel nationwide and gain a lot momentum has been taken off from public roads in much of the country over virus risks, and even its legs in the capital will now be held without spectators.
