Zeena Ali, a thirty year old muslim woman, applied to join the New Zealand Police after the Christchurch terror attacks. She will become the first officer in New Zealand to wear a hijab as part of her official uniform, after graduating from police training last week. The New Zealand Police worked closely with her during her training at the Royal New Zealand Police College to design the hijab, in order to make sure it is both respectful of the faith of muslim officers and functional.
The New Zealand Police have stated that, “We recognise the value different perspectives and experiences bring to making us better at what we do”. Zeena Ali thought about joining the police force in the wake of the mass shootings at two mosques in Christchurch New Zealand. She said, while speaking to the NZ Herald, “That’s when I realised more Muslim women were needed in the police, to go and support people with things like this. If I had joined the police earlier I would have been down there to help.”.
