What Happened: The federal cabinet took the decision to remove Bukhari as chairman PTV as per IHC court order, resuming Aamer Manzoor as the managing director who was earlier eliminated by the firms’ board of directors on 1st January 2021.
Earlier Developments: Previously, Bokhari was called before the National Assembly’s committee to Information and Broadcasting for his statement regarding not allowing opposition screen time which he explained was a ‘joke’. However, the IHC restrained the PTV chairman from his position due to the set of petitions against Bukhari’s appointment citing a violation of a 2018 Supreme Court judgment in a suo motu* case.
*an act of authority taken without formal prompting from another party. The term is usually applied to actions by a judge taken without a prior motion or request from the parties.
What’s Next: Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry explained that the decision was taken through circulation instead of a formal meeting of the cabinet because the absence of a chairman caused a ‘chaos like situation’ for PTV. Additionally, the board also removed two other directors as they were above the age of 65.
