NADRA’s initiative to register orphan children is being applauded by many

What happened: Pakistan’s National Database and Registration Authority have launched an interesting plan. NADRA has launched a program to register orphan children in Pakistan. The announcement was made by Director General retired Major Saqlain Abbas, on his visit to the SOS village. At the same time, NADRA’s team led by Major also issues CNICs to the under-18 children of the SOS Village.

Previously: The CNIC of the orphan children could only be issued on the production of their guardian’s records. However, in 2020, the SHC had asked “Are orphans not considered Pakistani citizens?” NADRA was then directed to make CNIC of the orphans. Details: The SHC had told NADRA to prepare a policy to issue CNIC to orphans. The National Database and Registration Authority tweeted, “By registration of 2524 Orphans (children) with known parentage & 160 orphans with unknown parentage making them the citizens of Pakistan recently..” While, they also added, “We want to move towards inclusive registration – step by step.” At the same time, the authority has claimed to register all the orphan children of Pakistan in 2021. The DG NADRA, Saqlain Abbas said, the institution would help the orphan children to pursue their goals and has deployed a mobile van at the SOS institution.
