Muslim woman knocked unconscious in a hate-motived attack: Edmonton, Canada

What happened: A Muslim woman in hijab was knocked unconscious on a St. Albert pathway Wednesday after she and her sister were attacked by a knife-wielding man uttering racial slurs, police say. Backstory: At 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, a white man attacked two young Muslim sisters in their 20s. The suspect approached them wielding a knife and yelling racist remarks while the women were walking down gravel pathway near Alderwood Park, bordering Edmonton’s northwest. He knocked down both women on the ground, holding the knife against their throat. Throughout, he continued yelling racial slurs at both women. The first woman was lost consciousness and was transported to hospital. She attained some non-life threatening injuries. The second woman also sustained minor injuries but was not taken to hospital, RCMP said.  The investigation is ongoing. St. Albert RCMP are working with the Edmonton Police Service. The suspect is yet to be caught. Both sisters are studying criminology at the post-secondary level. One works for REACH Edmonton, a NGO that advocates for safe communities. Her younger sister also volunteers for the same organization as a summer student. A REACH Edmonton spokesperson told CBC News the family moved to Quebec from Iraq, but after experiencing racism in Eastern Canada, they moved to Alberta.  There has been a surge in reports on hate-crime against Muslims in Canada. This attack comes just weeks after a Muslim family was run down and killed in London, Ont., prompting national calls for action to address anti-Muslim hate. Earlier this month when a Somali Canadian woman wearing a hijab was reportedly grabbed by the neck and pushed to the sidewalk. An Edmonton mosque was also vandalized with a swastika symbol

St. Albert Mayor Cathy Heron called the attack an act of domestic terrorism. “I find this intolerable,” Heron said. “Heartbroken for sure. But infuriated as well.”

As a result, protests and rallies are being carried out throughout the Edmonton demanding protection for Muslim women.
