What happened: On February 16, a 17 year old student, Hoda Al Jamaa of Otago Girls’ High School, was with her friends when three other girls attacked her and hurled abuses at the 17 year old. She is quoted by a local publication as, “Two of the girls held me and one hit me and after I fell on the ground, she was still hitting my face and my body. I was waiting for the teacher to help me.”
Details: At the same time, an Otago publication reported, “The girls took her(Hoda) hijab off and continued filming her and the video has now been shared with boys and girls around the school.” It is pertinent to mention that Hoda was not the only one who was attacked, but her two other friends were also attacked, whereas, the Otago publication reported, “It was not the first time she had been involved in a violent attack. She frequently had the fingers pulled at her and called a terrorist by other students.”
New Zealand police : According to the NZ Police, “The altercation and the possibility of the video circulating on social media is very concerning to us.” However, the police have identified three attackers, though they are yet to be arrested.
